My Math Story
As a math educator I love all things math, but my math journey didn't start with love.
As a young learner, I disliked math. The pressure to get the right answer, the memorization, the formulas, and the shame of saying "the wrong thing" in front of the class filled me with anxiety and frustration. I never understood the importance of these skills, how they connect, or why I was doing what I was doing.
When I became a teacher, research surrounding math began to expand. As math educators, we started to realize the emphasis should've been on the thinking, not just the right answer. We started realizing that math is everywhere and all around us, not just numbers in a workbook. Math experts started proving the need to teach math conceptually and deeply, so students can be successful not only in class, but in the real world. Most importantly, the research proves that in order for students to grow in math, they need to have a positive mindset, see mistakes as an opportunity to learn, be curious, and see the joy in math learning.
With your child, I hope to provide guidance and create opportunities for them to see math in a new light as I did. I hope to use my knowledge to help them grow in their math journey, whether they need practice with skills from previous grade levels, need to be challenged through enrichment, or anything in between.
